MY PLATFORM: "Path to a Cure"
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

JDRF

Mickey & Susie Inspired by her young neighbor, a delightful girl by the name of Mickey, Susie has watched Mickey’s family (and an innocent child at the age of 3), grow up with this painful disease. Susie says, "There is no day off in the life of a child with juvenile diabetes. As Mrs. Minnesota 2010, it is my commitment to be the voice of hope and to touch the lives of all the children who suffer with this devastating disease each and every day. It is my mission to promote my platform in hopes that we may someday find a cure."

JDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In FY2008 the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants and fellowships in 22 countries

EVENTS:

Walk to Cure Diabetes

About the Walk To Cure Diabetes
The Walk to Cure Diabetes is JDRF’s largest national fundraising event. Last year, the walk raised over $100 million for diabetes research in more than 200 walk sites in the United States and around the world.

About the Sneaker Program
Sneaker sales are one way for retail stores to build excitement about the Walk to Cure Diabetes in their community while raising critical research dollars that can be credited to the company’s walk team total. National sneaker sellers have included Advance Auto Parts, Walgreens, and Marshalls, just to name a few.
